NEW IDEA FOR FIRST PROJECT

I haven't been happy with the direction my project is going. I don't think that projecting time lapse onto a cloud statue will create the effect I was looking for. I have spent a lot of time brain storming how I could change my project. I have come up with the idea of creating INDOOR CLOUD GAZING! I want to borrow my very generous classmate's camera and record a long segment of cloud time lapse. I then want to project my recording inside in overhead space so that viewers feel like they are outside looking up at the sky.

I need to think about how I want to project the film overhead. This depends on where I present my project and on whether or not I have the audience sit or stand. If I present in the classroom, I could project onto the ceiling and have viewers lay on the floor. If I present in the black box, I could create an inclosed space with sheets and metal hangers and project onto a white space. This could get tricky because, what type of fabric? how big do i want the space to be? how will viewers enter and exit the space? etc

What I like most about this idea is creating the illusion of being outside laying in a field, gazing up at the sky. This idea gives me space to play around with noise. I think that some kind of audio needs to accompany the projection to genuinely create this illusion. Maybe I can record sound when I record the video. this may be boring because where I recorded last  was by the diagonal highway so the sound recording would just be of cars passing. Maybe this would work. I will have to play around and experiment some bit.

  1. interesting shift of idea - which seems even more focused than your original plans. this is how it works - work through an idea toward the way its really meant to be!

i agree figuring out the ideal space is the way to start-- but if you want us to feel like we're laying down in a field of grass perhaps that limits how we are to experience it ie: you want to focus on a space that will force us to lay down -- seems to me the best way to do this is to literally have the projection directly above us (so its too hard to stand and look at it) - perhaps low to the ground as well? as with the sheet you describe? almost tent like.

next thing to test is where the projector would have to be placed -- is it possible for it to be angled down ontop of a tent-like screen? would you need a mirror to reflect the image downward? we can try some things during our open studio wednesday.

    sounds great!
